bio

Laura DeNatale is a photographer and encaustic artist based in Ottawa, Ontario. Her professional journey into the art world began in Chicago, Illinois studying fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and then graphic design at the Illinois Institute of Art.

Laura has studied and practiced a wide range of art disciplines including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and textiles.

Since moving to Canada in 2022, Laura has found that exploring her natural surroundings is an integral part of “putting down roots.” It has been through this process that the literal and figurative meaning of being rooted has taken on a new focus in her artwork.

Her current work involves photographing landscapes in the surrounding Ontario and Quebec provinces and digitally modifying the colour to convey her emotional responses to the scenes she photographs.

Laura further enhances some of her photographs using photo-encaustic techniques in which printed photographs are layered with encaustic and other mediums, giving them a dreamlike quality.
